The Day The Earth Stood Still

An installment of our Robot Hall of Fame film series

With an introduction and Theremin performance by Pittsburgh musician Ben Opie!

May 20
Rated G

When a UFO lands in Washington, D.C., bearing a message for Earth's leaders, all of humanity stands still. Klaatu (Michael Rennie) has come on behalf of alien life who have been watching Cold War-era nuclear proliferation on Earth. But it is Klaatu's soft-spoken robot Gort that presents a more immediate threat to onlookers. A single mother (Patricia Neal) and her son teach the world about peace and tolerance in this moral fable, ousting the tanks and soldiers that greet the alien's arrival.

Enjoy an introduction and performance by Pittsburgh musician Ben Opie, who will discuss how to play the Theremin, the electronic instrument used in the film’s iconic theme! Carnegie Public Library staff will give Theremin demonstrations in The Rangos lobby, as well.

This is the first installment in our Robot Hall of Fame film series, through which we will pay tribute to the beloved Hollywood robots featured in Carnegie Science Center’s roboworld® exhibit gallery! Snap a selfie with our replica of Gort in The Rangos lobby!

About The Rangos Giant Cinema

By virtue of the technology, colorful and comfortable architecture, and atmosphere of the new cinema, The Rangos is designed to be a destination that provides immersive and exciting experiences to our guests. After your stay, we want you to feel like you have visited the "Mother of all Theaters," as a member of our focus group described it.

The new cinema system will include two industry-leading Christie® laser-illuminated 4K laser digital projectors, which will dazzle you with bright, ultra-sharp images, and incredibly vivid colors. Coupled with a premium Dolby Atmos® multichannel surround sound system – a first for institutional giant screen theaters, which uses a huge array of front, back, side and overhead speakers – you will be completely immersed in the action.

In addition to a continued focus on the awe-inspiring mission-centric documentaries that the Rangos Theater has become known for over the past 26 years, this new technology will provide extensive new capabilities and significant opportunities for you to enjoy a broad range of dynamic content. From Hollywood feature films, film festivals, cult and classic films, to educational and event films, 3D experiences, and extreme special effects, look for something new, exciting, and unique every month.
