JOB TITLE: Temporary Field Assistant-Entomology

DESCRIPTION: Powdermill Nature Reserve is Carnegie Museum of Natural History's environmental research center. Located 55 miles southeast of Pittsburgh in Rector, Pennsylvania, Powdermill is a field station and laboratory where researchers do long-term studies of natural populations in western Pennsylvania. In addition to being positioned for Appalachian-specific studies in ornithology, ecology, invertebrate zoology, and botany, Powdermill is a great place to spend a fun-filled day outdoors with the family.

We are currently seeking a FIELD ASSISTANT I - ENTOMOLOGY. This is a temporary position.

Collect and identify insects. Plan and execute research in insect biology, including beneficial and pest insects, and insects as vectors. Prepare and disseminate scientific results. Contribute to composition of outreach content for use in public programs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree in entomology, zoology, or related field. Experience sampling and sorting insects for surveys including biomonitoring purposes. Experience also required in DNA analysis of insects. Successful record of organizing and presenting scientific results at professional meetings and in publication. Teaching experience desirable, both formal and informal outreach settings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Familiarity with insect taxonomy and field collecting methods. DNA laboratory skills. Good general computer and photography skills. Good public communication skills

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work includes strenuous hiking, walking across cold streams, carrying substantial loads over rough terrain and through forested areas, perhaps in inclement weather. May require a willingness to stay overnight on site at Powdermill Nature Reserve, or travel to field sites away from Powdermill Nature Reserve.
